You are one of the best known vocalists in the world, a so called “queen of dance”. May you please tell me something about your path of growth?
Cara Tara sei definita una delle vocalist più conosciute al mondo e definita “la regina della dance”. Vuoi raccontarmi il tuo percorso di crescita artistico?
I took the long way around into the music industry. I started singing professionally when I was 9 years old in the musical “Les Miserables” in London. No one in my family is in the music or entertainment business so I didn’t really have any advice on how to “make it”! My main goal was to keep on working which is one of the reasons I have had such a varied career, as I took all the opportunities that came my way. I trained as dancer (ballet, tap, modern, jazz, street dance) and studied music at the legendary BRIT School the same place where Adele, Amy Winehouse and Jessie J. were schooled. After graduating I found work experience at a record company mostly making tea and auditioned for everything going! 😀 I bought a van and a PA system and sang at every venue that would book me. Looking back, I can see I was really determined to change my life. I started to build a network of people working in the industry who will recommend me for jobs and that’s how I got to work with pop stars like Eric Clapton, Bryan Ferry and Ringo Starr from the Beatles! Usually people always focus on an artist as an “overnight” success but have no idea of the years of struggle! In my spare-time I was busy song writing and pitching songs to other artists as well as appearing at various acoustic venues in London hoping to be spotted by someone in the music industry. Actually, while performing at The Bedford in Balham (London) I was spotted by a publisher from Universal music, they liked my songwriting demos and gave me the chance to pitch on Axwell’s record “Feel The Vibe”. This was my first successful release as a featured artist. The first time I heard myself on radio which was really exciting, and put me for the first time on the map at the top of the international charts! I remember driving to my parent’s house, the song came on radio, I turned up the volume and my mum and dad and I danced around the car! 😀 The neighbours must have thought we were all crazy… 😀 “Feel the vibe” opened a lot of doors and soon I was offered to vocal “My My My” by Armand Van Helden which I’m proud to say has become a real dance anthem and put me on David Guetta’s radar! He asked me to collaborate on his “Pop Life” album which changed my life!
Ho fatto molta strada nell’industria musicale. Ho iniziato a cantare professionalmente quando avevo 9 anni nel musical “Les Miserables” a Londra. Nessuno nella mia famiglia è nel settore della musica o dell’intrattenimento, quindi non avevo davvero alcun consiglio su come “farcela”! Il mio obiettivo principale era continuare a lavorare e questo è uno dei motivi per cui ho avuto una carriera così varia, poiché ho sfruttato tutte le opportunità che mi si presentavano. Mi sono formato come ballerina (balletto, tip tap, moderno, jazz, street dance) e ho studiato musica presso la leggendaria scuola BRIT nello stesso luogo in cui Adele, Amy Winehouse e Jessie J. hanno studiato. Dopo la laurea ho trovato un’esperienza lavorativa presso una casa discografica. Ho comprato un furgone e un sistema di amplificazione e ho cantato in ogni locale che mi avrebbe accolta. Guardando indietro, vedo che ero determinata a cambiare la mia vita. Ho iniziato a costruire una rete di persone che lavorano nel settore e che mi consiglieranno per il lavoro ed è così che ho avuto modo di lavorare con pop star come Eric Clapton, Bryan Ferry e Ringo Starr dei Beatles! Di solito le persone si concentrano sempre su un artista come un successo “overnight” ma non hanno idea degli anni di lotta! Nel mio tempo libero ero impegnato a scrivere canzoni e a lanciare canzoni ad altri artisti, oltre ad apparire in vari locali a Londra sperando di essere notata da qualcuno nell’industria musicale.
In realtà, mentre suonavo al Bedford in Balham (Londra), sono stato notato da un editore della musica Universal, mi sono piaciuti i miei demo di songwriting e mi hanno dato l’opportunità di presentare il disco di Axel “Feel The Vibe”. Questa è stata la mia prima uscita di successo come artista in primo piano. La prima volta che mi sono sentita alla radio è stato davvero emozionante e mi ha messo per la prima volta sulla mappa in cima alle classifiche internazionali! Ricordo di aver guidato fino a casa dei miei genitori, la canzone è arrivata in radio, ho alzato il volume e mia mamma e mio padre e io abbiamo ballato intorno alla macchina! : D I vicini devono aver pensato che eravamo tutti pazzi …: D “Feel the Vibe” ha aperto molte porte e presto mi è stato offerto di cantare “My My My” di Armand Van Helden che sono orgoglioso di dire è diventato un vero inno da ballo e mettermi sul radar di David Guetta! Mi ha chiesto di collaborare al suo album “Pop Life” che mi ha cambiato la vita!
You have done several musical collaborations, what was the most influential and the most emotional artist you worked with?
So che vanti di importanti collaborazioni musicali, ce le vuoi descrivere? Qual è stato l’artista conosciuto più influente ed emozionante?
I have been really lucky to mostly work with lovely people. The first person that believed in me and gave me a chance is Luke Morley a songwriter / guitarist from a UK rock band called “Thunder”. He also saw me performing at the Bedford and was the first person to co-write with me. We used to hang out, drink wine and he’d play me loads of music all night, he also used to feed me as I never had money for food as was really struggling financially when I first moved to London! He was the first person to employ me as a backing singer on an album he made with Andy Taylor from Duran Duran. We toured all over the UK and later Japan, I was 18 and it was incredible to be working with these amazing musicians. Luke and I are still really good friends today, I will always be grateful to him.
Bryan Ferry was such a lovely person to work with. He was always so complimentary and gave me a lot of confidence in myself and trusted me to create the backing vocals on his “Dylanesque” album. We both love the music by “The Byrds” and so I tried to incorporate that sound into the vocals. I loved the time we spent together as he’s such an interesting person, he’s private but when you get him talking he’s so charming, funny, witty and very intelligent. When I was asked to be a cover girl for Playboy France, Bryan asked for signed copy! 😀
To be honest, at the beginning, working with DJ’s was not a positive experience. I always had to fight for a fair deal, people wanted to use my voice and my songs but didn’t want to credit me as the vocalist or want my name on a record or appearing in the video. They were happy to use what I gave them but were reluctant to give anything in return. This world is a bit egocentric. Working with David Guetta was different. I was the first singer he ever put in a music video and he invited me on TV and radio shows to promote the single “Delirious” we wrote. I had never been involved in the promotion before as a featured artist and learnt a lot from this process. David is unusual as he really likes to share the spotlight! After a big performance in Paris, we ended up celebrating in a strip-club which was so crazy and unexpected! 😀 He kept saying to me “Tara, I’m sure you’re a lesbian” as I couldn’t stop watching the dancers performing incredible acrobatics on the pole!
Todd Terry has this same kind quality too. When we worked together on his “All Stars” project, we had so much fun. Our collaboration gave me a lot of credibility in the house music world as he is still considered “Todd the God”! He’s someone I have so much respect for and he’s so goddam funny! 😀 Hanging out with him is always a pleasure. I have a lot of love for him.
Sono stata davvero fortunata a lavorare principalmente con persone adorabili. La prima persona che ha creduto in me e mi ha dato una possibilità è Luke Morley, un cantautore / chitarrista di un gruppo rock del Regno Unito chiamato “Thunder”. Mi ha anche visto esibirsi al Bedford ed è stata la prima persona a scrivere insieme a me. Andavamo in giro, bevevamo vino e lui mi suonava un sacco di musica tutta la notte, anche lui mi dava da mangiare dato che non avevo mai avuto soldi per il cibo, dato che ero davvero in difficoltà finanziariamente quando mi sono trasferita a Londra! È stato il primo a impiegarmi come sostenitore di un album che ha realizzato con Andy Taylor dei Duran Duran. Abbiamo girato tutto il Regno Unito e più tardi il Giappone, avevo 18 anni ed è stato incredibile lavorare con questi straordinari musicisti. Luke e io siamo ancora veramente buoni amici oggi, gli sarò sempre grata. Bryan Ferry era una persona così adorabile con cui lavorare. È sempre stato così gentile e mi ha dato molta fiducia in me stessa e mi ha affidato il coro nel suo album “Dylanesque”. Entrambi amiamo la musica di “The Byrds” e così ho cercato di incorporare quel suono nella voce. Ho amato il tempo trascorso insieme perché è una persona così interessante, è privato ma quando gli parli è così affascinante, divertente, spiritoso e molto intelligente. Quando mi è stato chiesto di diventare una cover girl per Playboy France, Bryan ha chiesto copia firmata!
Per essere onesti, all’inizio, lavorare con i DJ non era un’esperienza positiva. Ho sempre dovuto lottare per un accordo equo, la gente voleva usare la mia voce e le mie canzoni ma non voleva accreditarmi come cantante o volere il mio nome su un disco o apparire nel video. Erano felici di usare ciò che davo loro, ma erano riluttanti a dare qualcosa in cambio. Questo mondo è un po ‘egocentrico. Lavorare con David Guetta era diverso. Sono stata la prima cantante che abbia mai inserito in un video musicale e mi ha invitato in TV e in programmi radiofonici per promuovere il singolo “Delirious” che abbiamo scritto. Non ero mai stato coinvolta nella promozione prima come artista in evidenza e ho imparato molto da questo processo. David è insolito perché gli piace davvero condividere i riflettori! Dopo una grande esibizione a Parigi, abbiamo finito per festeggiare in uno strip-club che è stato così folle e inaspettato! : D Continuava a dirmi “Tara, sono sicuro che sei lesbica” perché non riuscivo a smettere di guardare le ballerine che eseguivano incredibili acrobazie sul palo!
Anche Todd Terry ha la stessa qualità. Quando abbiamo lavorato insieme al suo progetto “All Stars”, ci siamo divertiti così tanto. La nostra collaborazione mi ha dato molta credibilità nel mondo della musica house visto che è ancora considerato “Todd the God”! È qualcuno con cui ho tanto rispetto ed è così dannatamente divertente! : D Uscire con lui è sempre un piacere. Ho un sacco di stima per lui.
Your social commitment emerges in your personality, what do you remember about your experience as a Unicef ambassador at the age of 12?
Il tuo impegno sociale emerge nella tua personalità, mi racconti dall’esperienza come Ambasciatrice Unicef all’età di 12 anni?
I ended up becoming the youngest child ambassador for UNICEF after winning a European singing competition representing England. It was hosted by Audrey Hepburn, the Queen of Holland, Harry Belafonte and Gina Lollobrigida was in the audience. I had no idea who they were at the time. It was such a shock to win this competition as I had a terrible throat infection and thought I’d come last. I really cried when they announced I was the winner. The competition was held in Holland and was the first time I’d ever travelled abroad. Winning this competition had a massive impact on my life as I had many duties for Unicef over the course of a year, starting with recording my first ever single and making a music video in Africa to promote the “Rights of the child”. I spent a week in Africa recording the video and visiting schools delivering much needed supplies. It was the first time I was one of the only white faces in the room as a minority. I also saw how children would give everything for an education and how happy people could be with so little. It taught me to be grateful for what I have. Returning back to London was a real culture shock, I had a meeting with the Prime minister of England at 10 Downing Street to deliver a report from Unicef. I had the privilege to sing with fellow Unicef ambassadors like Julio Iglesias! This role made such an impact on me personally and gave me the passion to want to help people, to promote equality for Woman and the LGBTQ community, as anything less than equality is an insult! I’m also passionate about promoting kindness to animals and “cruelty free” living. I became vegan after visiting a Buddhist monastery in Sri Lanka, the monk asked me if I ate meat which I didn’t as I was vegetarian, and he said “Good, Tara, you’re not a murderer”. We talked about veganism, I now call it my “Good karma diet” as it’s better for the body, mind, environment and of course the innocent animals.
Sono diventata l’ambasciatrice più giovane per l’UNICEF dopo aver vinto un concorso europeo di canto che rappresenta l’Inghilterra. E ‘stato ospitato da Audrey Hepburn, la regina d’Olanda, Harry Belafonte e Gina Lollobrigida era tra il pubblico. Non avevo idea di chi fossero in quel momento. È stato un tale shock vincere questa competizione perché ho avuto una terribile infezione alla gola e ho pensato che sarei arrivata ultima. Vincere questa competizione ha avuto un impatto enorme sulla mia vita, dato che ho avuto molti incarichi per l’Unicef nel corso di un anno, iniziando con la registrazione del mio primo singolo in assoluto e realizzando un video musicale in Africa per promuovere i “Diritti del bambino”. Ho trascorso una settimana in Africa registrando il video e visitando le scuole fornendo le forniture necessarie. Era la prima volta che ero uno dei pochi volti bianchi nella stanza come minoranza. Ho anche visto come i bambini avrebbero dato tutto per un’educazione e quanto le persone potessero stare felici con così poco. Mi ha insegnato ad essere grata per quello che ho. Ritornare a Londra è stato un vero shock culturale, ho avuto un incontro con il Primo Ministro dell’Inghilterra a 10 Downing Street per consegnare un rapporto dell’Unicef. Ho avuto il privilegio di cantare con altri ambasciatori dell’Unicef come Julio Iglesias! Questo ruolo ha avuto un tale impatto su di me personalmente e mi ha dato la passione di voler aiutare le persone, promuovere l’uguaglianza per la donna e la comunità LGBTQ, poiché qualsiasi cosa di meno dell’uguaglianza è un insulto! Sono anche appassionato di promozione della gentilezza verso gli animali e di una vita “libera da crudeltà”. Sono diventata vegana dopo aver visitato un monastero buddista nello Sri Lanka, il monaco mi ha chiesto se mangiavo carne che non avevo, dato che ero vegetariana, e ha detto “Bene, Tara, non sei un assassino”. Abbiamo parlato del veganismo, ora lo chiamo la mia “dieta del buon karma” perché è meglio per il corpo, la mente, l’ambiente e, naturalmente, gli animali innocenti.

I am obsessed with fashion! I can literally see a new collection and hyperventilate! 😀 I love going to see the fashion shows and I really see fashion as one of my personal expressions. For example, if I feel sad, I put on a bold colourful look which completely elevates my mood. And when I dress for stage, I choose clothes that empower me and make me feel like a super hero! I’ve always been this way, I remember seeing Vogue magazine at an airport as a child and begging my Dad to buy it for me which he refused! I get really excited about new trends, I love finding rare unusual pieces in new boutiques in whichever city I’m in and scouring charity shops and flea markets for vintage pieces. I also have a big problem as I’m secretly addicted to eBay! I get some real gems here 😀 As a vegan, I’m against animal cruelty and wear “kind” clothing everyday. I think it’s a great new message to show that you can still be a “fashionista” without hurting animals. I’m actually secretly working with my team on a brand which is totally kind fashion.

Posso letteralmente vedere una nuova collezione e iper ventilare! : D Mi piace andare a vedere le sfilate di moda e vedo davvero la moda come una delle mie espressioni personali. Ad esempio, se mi sento triste, metto su un audace look colorato che eleva completamente il mio umore. E quando mi vesto per il palco, scelgo vestiti che mi danno forza e mi fanno sentire un supereroe! Sono sempre stata così, ricordo di aver visto la rivista Vogue in un aeroporto da bambina e di aver chiesto a mio padre di comprarlo per me, cosa che lui ha rifiutato! Sono davvero entusiasta delle nuove tendenze, mi piace trovare pezzi insoliti rari in nuove boutique in qualsiasi città in cui mi trovo e setacciare negozi di beneficenza e mercatini delle pulci per pezzi vintage. Ho anche un grosso problema dato che sono segretamente dipendente da eBay! Ho delle belle gemme qui: D Come vegano, sono contro la crudeltà sugli animali e indosso vestiti “gentili” ogni giorno. Penso che sia un grande nuovo messaggio mostrare che puoi essere ancora un “fashionista” senza ferire gli animali. In realtà sto segretamente lavorando con la mia squadra su un marchio che è del tutto gentile.
Right now you are starting a solo career with the release of the new single TAXXXI, video set in Paris (available on Youtube and on all digital platforms), what does this song mean for you?
In questo momento stai intraprendendo una carriera da solista con l’uscita del nuovo singolo TAXXXI (DISPONIBILE SU YOUTUBE E TUTTE LE PIATTAFORME STREAMING), cosa rappresenta per te?
I feel like I have been reborn with this song, it’s very different from anything I have released before. Its unashamedly fun, pop and not trying to be too cool. It’s pure happiness, I think it turned out this way as we had so much fun when we were writing it! You can definitely hear a strong 80’s influence as I’ve been listening to a lot of Cyndi Lauper and early Madonna as well as binge watching “Stranger Things”! So these sounds have trickled down into the music. The message of the song is simple, I’ve nicknamed it “50 Shades of Taxxxi”! 😀 It’s a song about sexual freedom, the woman is in control and just giving into pleasure. It’s my fantasy song and makes me feel like sexy minx! 😀 I had so much fun shooting the video and kissing a sexy French model. Actually, he is gay which I discover after the casting, and I am the first ever girl he’s kissed in his life! He told me that his mother was so happy to see him with a girl in a video and hoping I would turn him “straight”! 😀
Mi sento come se fossi rinata con questa canzone, è molto diversa da tutto ciò che ho pubblicato prima. È spudoratamente divertente, pop. È pura felicità, penso che sia andata in questo modo perché ci siamo divertiti così tanto quando stavamo scrivendo! Sicuramente puoi sentire un’influenza forte degli anni ’80, dato che ho ascoltato un sacco di Cyndi Lauper e la prima di Madonna, oltre a guardare “Stranger Things”! Quindi questi suoni sono scesi nella musica. Il messaggio della canzone è semplice, l’ho soprannominato “50 Shades of Taxxxi”! : D È una canzone sulla libertà sessuale, la donna ha il controllo e dà semplicemente piacere. Bearing in mind the experience you made in “The Voice – Belgium edition”, what are the key messages that you’d like to transfer to young people?
Dopo la tua esperienza come vocal coach a The Voice Belgio, quale messaggio ti senti di dare ai giovani?
Working on “The Voice” was an incredible experience. I told the contestants there may only be one winner of the show but that doesn’t mean your career ends there, pick yourself up and keep going! My career has been a rollercoaster full of highs and lows, I have had 2 album deals before now and like many huge artists I never got to release those albums which was heartbreaking. I’ve now signed my 3rd album deal and so finally I’m more than happy to share it with everybody later this year. I’m actually ecstatic! No one ever said that working in the music business is easy, but it’s not impossible either, I’m living proof of that. Life is full of many chances, take all the opportunities you are given, always give your best and never give up. That’s the mantra I live by.
Lavorare a “The Voice” è stata un’esperienza incredibile. Ho detto ai partecipanti che ci potrebbe essere solo un vincitore dello spettacolo, ma questo non significa che la tua carriera finisca lì, riprenditi e vai avanti! La mia carriera è stata un ottovolante pieno di alti e bassi, ho avuto due album in precedenza e come molti artisti giganteschi non ho mai avuto modo di pubblicare quegli album che sono stati strazianti. Ho firmato il mio terzo album e alla fine sono più che felice di condividerlo con tutti alla fine di quest’anno. Sono davvero entusiasta! Nessuno ha mai detto che lavorare nel mondo della musica sia facile, ma non è nemmeno impossibile, ne sono la prova vivente. La vita è piena di molte possibilità, prendi tutte le opportunità che ti vengono date, dai sempre il massimo e non mollare mai. Questo è il mantra con cui vivo.
